NOW!
MUSIC®: From Nowhere to Now Here
As
is often the case with new discoveries, Mike Garson created the style of music
sold under the NOW! MUSIC brand almost by accident. While composing a series of
short etudes in 1995, Garson challenged his skills. Limiting
himself to only atonal music and an entirely non-jazz vocabulary, Garson recorded
directly to his Yamaha Disklavier (a modern-day player piano). As
he played, the Disklavier recorded, giving him an immediate, tangible record of
his efforts. Like
Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Mozart (whose improvisations are unknown because
of the technological limitations of their times) Garson played without any preconceived
notions. The
result was a collection of refreshing, inspirational and original compositions.
More
than 40 years and 100,000 hours of practice enabled him to actualize something
that had surrounded him his entire life. Through modern technology, Garson was
able to capture the essence of improvisation. "Ironically,
stepping into the classical world helped me realize I'd been performing NOW! MUSIC
in the jazz and rock worlds for my entire life," said Garson, "the ingredients
were always there, I simply united them into a cohesive method. NOW! MUSIC personifies
my lifetime devotion to improvisation."  NOW!
MUSIC empowers you to communicate exactly how you feel at any given moment. Granted,
a person shouldn't expect to make beautiful music with an instrument for which
they've had no instruction.
Rather,
the motivation behind the NOW! MUSIC brand of music is that a properly trained
musician in the proper state of mind can manifest some amazing results. Discipline,
training, skill and a solid understanding of music are also important elements
of it. "Perhaps
the real strength of NOW! MUSIC is that it transcends genre, style, medium and
any other creative barriers," Garson added, "Whether you're a classical, jazz
or rock musician, you have the potential to create in this medium. Just trust
yourself and your creativity will flow." Again,
the key to NOW! MUSIC is that it is recorded direct-to-disk (real-time). This
means that whatever is played becomes the actual composition. (Sheet music can
be generated afterwards). A completed piece can either be used as-is or altered
as needed to most effectively communicate the composer's intentions. "While
every composition might not be a masterpiece, you're certain to be fulfilled by
the process," Garson explained. "It's amazing what you can create when you believe
in yourself."  Of
course, solid ear training, a well-developed ear and excellent instrumental technique,
plus an extensive harmonic, melodic and rhythmic vocabulary make the task that
much easier.
Garson
hopes to teach this new method of composition to musicians around the world through
master classes, seminars and personal instruction. Ultimately,
the tenets of NOW! MUSIC may be applied to other creative endeavors including
art, dance, poetry, theatrical performance and writing. In the meantime, check
